HERITAGE WEEKEND

FEN END ROAD WEST, TEMPLE BALSALL B93 0AN
SEPTEMBER 9TH – 10TH 2023.
Watch this space as we are planning a special event nearer to Christmas.
During Heritage Weekend the Foundation of Lady Katherine Leveson will open its site at Temple Balsall to the public.
From the main car park on Fen End Road West, walk across the bridge over the pond and on to the Bread Walk. In bygone days this is where the ladies of the Court, known as Dames, walked to collect their bread. The Court, now known as Lady Katherine Housing and Care provides residential care, respite care and sheltered accommodation in single and double rooms. The original Old School Room is also situated here. Guided tours to the Court begin outside the Old Hall.
Lady Katherine Leveson C of E Primary School will also be open to visitors with games in the playground. In the hall you will find an Art Exhibition with works by local artists for sale. Opening times are Saturday 10.30am – 5pm and Sunday 11.30 – 4pm .
Continuing along the Bread Walk is The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin. This is believed to be a Hospitaller Church although there are those who would argue in favour of the Templars. Step inside to appreciate the sheer scale of this beautiful building, the Porritt organ and magnificent stained glass windows.
Adjacent to the Church is The Old Hall, the former Headquarters of the Knights Templar in Warwickshire from the 12th century until the 14th century. Today this timber framed building is encased in brick but once inside, the original timber beams are clearly visible. The Archives and Finds, which were excavated from a cellar in front of the Old Hall, are displayed here. Guided tours of the site start from here on Saturday, from 1.30pm.
Saturday from 12 – 5.00pm, Sunday 2.30 – 4.30pm
Evensong begins on Sunday at 6pm sung by the Birmingham Cathedral Choir with a guest preacher The Very Reverend Matt Thompson ( the Dean of Birmingham).
